Plans have been detailed on how a troublesome tunnel in Derby - where it is feared someone will one day be killed - will be made safer for the public. A bullet-point plan of action has been identified to improve the Arnhem Terrace tunnel in Spondon where anti-social behaviour problems have occurred for years.

The tunnel travels under the A52 Brian Clough Way connecting Derby and Nottingham. It is owned by National Highways, formerly named Highways England.

Major concerns about anti-social behaviour around the site have been reported to the authorities – and calls for improvements have been made. The issues mainly surround dangerous motorbike riders using the tunnel as a race track, gangs forming around the tunnel and drug-taking.

A mum of two, who lives in one of the houses next to the tunnel but did not wish to give her name, said she was frightened for her children to leave the house. Now, a series of new measures are being taken over the course of the next year to improve the tunnel and make it more welcoming. These works are in conjunction with National Highways, Derby City Council and Derby Homes – the housing arm of the city council.

Here is a list of improvements expected which Spondon councillors – Chris Poulter, Jonathan Smale and Nicola Roulstone – hope will happen within the next 12 months:

A statement from the Spondon councillors said: “Some of these proposals can be implemented quicker than others. The ambition is to complete this within the next 12 months, however some parts of the proposal may take slightly longer, so please bear with us.

“We do encourage residents to continue to report any anti-social behaviour via 101, or on the (Derbyshire police) website. All intel helps [to build a] patrol strategy for the police.”
